Background:

The River Region United Way has been serving the community for 100 years! In 1923, the Community Chest of Montgomery was established to address the needs of the community. The first campaign raised $50,000 and was distributed back into the community to fulfill these needs. In 1952, it became the United Appeal of Montgomery to serve as a fundraising organization for local social service agencies. It was determined that these agencies were helping more areas around Montgomery, which led to the name being changed to Montgomery Area United Appeal in 1969. In 1976, it became the Montgomery Area United Way, and the four pillars of assess, acquire, account and allocate were established.
In 2004, the name became River Region United Way, focusing on health, education, financial stability and basic needs. From 1923 to now, the focus has been on community needs, and how we can help our neighbors. Our Community Partner Agencies work hard to help address the needs.
