Background:

Celebrating 50 years in 2024, HandsOn River Region was founded in 1974 as the Voluntary Action Center following a community-wide study conducted by the Junior League of Montgomery and the Community Council of the Montgomery Area United Way. The goal of HandsOn River Region is to increase the capacity of area nonprofits through our programs while providing coordinated, managed volunteerism to the community. HandsOn River Region runs six programs which serve approximately 45-60,000 individuals annually.
These programs include:
  • The 211 Information and Referral Hotline is a 3-digit phone number serving as a first point of contact to “Get Help or to Give Help” within the community. It serves an average of 2,000 callers a month in 14 counties in Alabama.
  • Christmas Clearinghouse coordinates and matches those in the River Region who need holiday assistance with generous individuals in the community who provide toys and gifts for families in need.
  • The Homeless Management Information System (HMIS) connects organizations that provide services such as shelter stays, entry and exit into shelters and placement into permanent or temporary housing.
  • The Volunteer Management program connects volunteers during everyday times and during disasters with opportunities to serve their community. HandsOn River Region places over 8,000 volunteers in community projects annually.

Brag Lines:

The Christmas Clearinghouse program provided $222,729 of assistance to 3,437 children in need during the 2022 holiday season.
