Mission:
In response to God’s Word, we embrace and nurture vulnerable children and families by providing homes, healing and hope.
Background:
In 1890, the Alabama Methodist Orphanage was founded in Summerfield, Alabama, and today is Embrace Alabama Kids. With homes and program offices located throughout the state, we’ve become one of Alabama’s most vital child welfare resources. We provide children, youth and families who have suffered from abuse and neglect with a safe home, nutritious meals, a spiritual foundation and an education—everything they need to heal physically, emotionally and spiritually. Through our Montgomery-based ministry, Mary Ellen’s Hearth, we provide housing and support for women and children experiencing homelessness to help them transition to an independent and safe environment where they can live successful, purpose-filled lives.

“Mary Ellen’s Hearth provides housing for women and their children who are homeless in the River Region. Family homelessness is the second leading cause of children entering the foster care system behind abuse and neglect. When a child enters foster care, there is a 50-percent chance they will grow up in foster care. That’s extremely difficult for the child’s life course and their descendants, and extremely expensive for taxpayers. Mary Ellen’s Hearth intervenes upon what often becomes a multi-generational issue of poverty and child welfare for our community.”
