Background:
Receiving a cancer diagnosis is devastating for anyone, but what if your fear was driven by having to decide between paying for fuel in your vehicle to get to the cancer center or paying your water bill? What if you had to decide between buying your medications or paying your mortgage? This was the reality for many patients in our area. So 26 years ago, three oncologists who recognized this need started the Foundation. In 2020, a nutrition program was added to assist patients who have been identified as at-risk for malnutrition.

“We serve patients from 32 counties in central Alabama, not just the River Region. Many travel more than two hours one-way, several times a week, for appointments and treatments. In 2022, we provided $172,817 in transportation assistance, which includes 7,194 unique rides for patients who do not have access to transportation and gas vouchers for those who have transportation, but can’t afford fuel. Last year, we also provided $28,560,347 in assistance with medications. Our direct support and services take away some of the financial burdens, allowing patients to focus on their cancer journey.”
